5/14/03 The overwhelming majority stated that open spaces, natural beauty and quiet are Ha'iku's best assets, with it's community and diverse people as a close second. Some of the results were surprising, especially concerning vacation rentals.
55% said B&B's and vacation rentals should be allowed and an additional 36% also said they should be allowed, but with restrictions such as neighborhood input. Only 9% said they should not by allowed.
People were also very concerned about over-development, infrastructure, and water supply. Other issues mentioned were roads and traffic, drugs and crime, quality of schools, affordable housing, ocean access, recreational areas, and a sense of community.
These issues are island wide, and show the concerns of other areas also. Our Mayor and planning Director have both stated how important local input is, and helps the community move in the direction it wants to go. That's what the last election was all about.
The HCA Board of Directors will continue to keep a pulse on it's residents views, and continue to search for ways to meet their needs. We will be having more community meetings in the near future. Anyone needing more information may call 575-9477.
